The story of Peter Whelan (1831-1900), nephew & namesake of American Civil War hero, Fr Peter Whelan with Celestine Murphy. In-Person

Join genealogist Celestine Murphy on Tuesday 27th September at 7.00pm in New Ross Library.

From Ballycullane, Co. Wexford to Madison County, Mississippi: the story of Peter Whelan (1831-1900), nephew and namesake of American Civil War hero, Fr Peter Whelan.

While doing some research on Fr Peter Whelan's Wexford ancestry, genealogist Celestine Murphy came upon a reference to the priest's previously unknown nephew, Peter Whelan. Intrigued, she set about tracing the younger Peter's origins.

What emerged was an astonishing life story which included his service on the Confederate side during the American Civil War, his two marriages and children, and finally the discovery of his descendants in Mississippi and Alabama.
