Beachcombing Revelations and Biodiversity on the South East Coast.

Beachcombing Revelations and Biodiversity on the South East Coast.   In-Person

Join Dr Jonathan Derham New Ross library for a beechcombing talk. You can be guaranteed it will change your appreciation of your beaches.  If you have any interesting items you have found on a beach walk then bring it along and you may be able to discover something new about it.

The talk will explore finds from the southeast and you will discover cannibal marine snails; extraordinary adaptations; ocean-going visitors to these shores; worms that are master masons; shells that sunk gallions (ship worms); sea sponges that eat rock; and animals that look like plants.  And we will learn about what may be the oldest solitary animal in Ireland living off-shore in Wexford.

Jonathan has a keen interest in the natural environment of Wexford - has been walking Ireland's beaches for over 50 years and is constantly amazed at the interesting finds that are washed up and what they tell us about biodiversity and about discovery.

Often what is found requires some detective work to determine what it was when alive, how it died, and where it came from.  These beach safaris are also instructive on the difference between looking and seeing - very often one can be surprised by what is revealed on closer examination.  The beaches in the southeast are particularly healthy if we take our lead from the abundant shell-life.
