Wexford Science Cafe - Taking Care of Soil – why soil science matters In-Person
Discussion with retired Teagasc scientists Noel Culleton and Brian Coulter
Soil is an essential resource for food production and much more. It needs to be well understood and cared for. The biology, chemistry and physics of soil are all implicated in ensuring farming and environmental protection work together. The key work in Ireland on these topics has been done over the past 80 years in Co. Wexford.
Our guests are two of the co-authors of a new book, Soil Matters - a history of science at Johnstown Castle. Dr Noel Culleton and Dr Brian Coulter had nearly 80 years combined service with Teagasc at Johnstown. They both played key roles in developing and then transforming soil science.
In the early years at Johnstown, agricultural science was focused on identifying the right match of fertilisers and soil types, and improving the unproductive farm practices of the time. Gradually, the focus has shifted to maintaining snd improving soil health, recognising the damage caused by excess of added nutrients. New labs are being built at Johnstown Castle to accommodate the growing research needs.
We will discuss with Dr Culleton and Dr Coulter how soil science has evolved, what it has contributed in the past to Irish food production, and what challenges it faces now and into the future. In line with the theme of Science Week Ireland, which is Regeneration, we will discuss how soil can degenerate and be regenerated, with the aid of soil science.
