Discovering Antarctica with Niamh Shaw, Science Communicator In-Person
Niamh's Voyage to Antarctic- lessons for Earth
In Nov 2023, Niamh joined 99 other Women in STEM leaders from across the globe who shared a passion for climate change. They spent 3.5 weeks together on a ship bound for the Antarctic circle. This was not a vacation. They worked and lived together in cramped conditions, surviving extreme cold, rough seas and 12-15 hour working days. Why? To witness firsthand the devastating impact of climate change on the Antarctic landscape. Niamh was also on a quest to bring Irish people with her and worked with Laois Education centre to provide regular updates and classroom resources to all the primary schools in the county. Working with a women's crafts group in Gorey, Co. Wexford to highlight the forgotten Irish women scientists, she carried their handmade quilt to the Antarctic in honour of these trailblazers and mavericks. Overwhelming at times for Niamh and hugely inspirational, the Southern oceans left her profoundly affected by the experience and she returned committed to sharing her stories of penguins, whales, icebergs, the Women in STEM quilt and nature's story of climate change.
Join her Nov 15th to hear about her Antarctic adventure, the handmade quilt made by a Gorey women’s group for her trip to honour Irish female scientists & how the experience impacted them personally and professionally.
Niamh:
Niamh Shaw, science communicator with PhD in science and 2 degrees in Engineering and international fellow of The Explorers Club really cares about our planet. She has quite literally devoted her life to exploring Earth from the ground and above, from space. Experiencing life in the extremes she reports on science assignments from the remotest parts of the world to lead the change for a healthier and more sustainable planet. She contributes to The Irish Times, BBC Sky at Night magazine, RTE television and radio, BBC and SkyNews. She is excited to join Jessamyn for Science week to share their stories of a life-changing leadership voyage on climate action at the Antarctic.
