Wexford Science Cafe: After 23andMe, where now for DNA testing? In-Person
The financial collapse of 23andMe has thrown a spotlight on the business of DNA testing. Fifteen million people gave saliva samples to this US biotechnology company, but the company never recorded a profit. Now the future security of this large store of data is unknown. Many other companies have also been gathering similar data for tracing ancestry and kinship.
The value of the data for companies working on genetic causes and therapies for diseases is immense. But what is the value of the information that DNA testing companies provide to individuals who submit their samples? There may be unwelcome as well as welcome news in knowing your predisposition to certain conditions, or that you have third cousins in Delaware. But what does it mean to know that you are 23% Italian?
Join Cliona O’Farrelly, professor of immunology at Trinity College Dublin, and Dr Andrew Lloyd, former lecturer in biology at SETU Carlow, in a discussion of the pros and cons of DNA testing. Bring along your own stories, if you have them, of doing one of these tests.
Booking is essential.
