Dunbrody Abbey - History and Context

Dunbrody Abbey - History and Context In-Person

Dunbrody Abbey near Campile was one of the first in Ireland to be built by the Anglo Normans upon their arrival.  800 years later it remains one of the best preserved and most impressive in the country.  When you drive by it you just know it has an interesting story to tell.  Who built it, and why? Why in this location? What was life like for the monks? Why is it a ruin - what happened?

Derek Handley lives in Arthurstown and is the tour guide at Dunbrody Abbey. In this talk Derek will answer these questions and more, and will tell the story of how the abbey has been shaped by great historical events and has done it's fair share of shaping how this corner of south west Wexford has developed over the centuries.
