The Book of Evidence won the 1989 GPA Award and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. One of Banville’s outstanding novels, it is a brilliant and audacious crime story inspired by real life events as well as being a highly sophisticated meditation on art, authenticity, and ethics.

John Banville is not only one of Ireland’s greatest living writers, he is a truly global literary figure. Over his career, from the early 1970s to the present, he has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (1976), the Booker Prize (2005), and the Franz Kafka Prize (2011), among many others. His writing is renowned for its stylistic virtuosity, formal innovation, compelling storytelling, and philosophical and literary intertextuality. His imaginative universe is populated by artists, scientists, fraudsters, criminals and detectives and encompasses themes of art, memory, existence, truth, identity, classical mythology and the invention of the self. This four-part reading programme of selected novels explores the richness of his work.
Dr Eoghan Smith is the author of John Banville: Art and Authenticity (2014) and the novels The Failing Heart (2018), A Provincial Death (2022) and A Mind of Winter (2023). He lectures in creative writing and English literature at Carlow College.
