Is coffee good or bad for you?

Not long ago, coffee was considered mainly risky to health, being associated with increased blood pressure and risk of stroke as well as other diseases. But nutrition and other health sciences now offer a different view, especially in relation to coffee’s contribution to gut health.

With coffee consumption and the number and variety of coffee outlets all rising, we will be asking: how do the harms and benefits of coffee balance out? We will hear from researchers at University College Cork about their recent research on coffee’s impact on the relations between microbiota in the body, gut health and brain function.

We will also hear how a British epidemiologist regards coffee as having been “demonised” in the past and deserving recognition for its positive contributions to our health. We will review some of the many studies that associate coffee with risk of Parkinson’s disease, liver cancer and hypertension, but also with improved mortality and good mood.

International Coffee Day is coming up on 1 October, celebrating coffee producers around the world. Do we raise a cup to celebrate them? Are you a coffee enthusiast or a coffee sceptic? All are welcome at our Café to tell their stories.
