"The disbanded Royal Irish Constabulary and forced migration, 1922–31” with Brian Hughes In-Person
When the Royal Irish Constabulary was disbanded in 1922, some 8,000 Irish-born members were left with uncertain futures in the recently partitioned Ireland. This talk will examine the process of disbandment, its immediate consequences, and the range of experiences faced by Irish-born ex-RIC and their families after 1922 and include a particular focus on men disbanded from Co. Wexford.
Dr Brian Hughes lectures in History at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. His published works include 16 Lives: Michael Mallin (O'Brien Press, 2012), Defying the IRA? Intimidation, coercion and communities during the Irish Revolution (Liverpool University Press, 2016), and Dublin: the Irish Revolution, 1912-1923 (Four Courts Press, 2024).
